ANOMALY: An irregular or unusual event which does not fit a standard rule or law. An anomaly is something which cannot be explained by currently accepted scientific theories. Anything weird, abnormal, strange, odd, or difficult to classify is considered an anomaly.

APPARITION: Anything that appears unexpectedly in a strange way.

AURA: A field of energy that surrounds living creatures.

DEMATERIALIZATION: The paranormal fading or disappearance of a physical object.

DOPPELGANGER: A mirror image or “double” of a person.

DIVINING ROD: A forked rod, or a pair of L-shaped rods used in dowsing.

EVP (ELECTRONIC VOICE PHENOMENON): A spiritual voice caught on a tape recorder, and is usually not audible at the time of the recording.

ECTO MIST (Ectoplasm): A cloudy substance caught on film usually resembling fog. White in color. Do not confuse this with cigar or cigarette smoke which is bluish in color.  

ESP (EXTRASENSORY PERCEPTION): An awareness of actual happenings or information not attained through the normal senses.

GHOST: A trapped earthbound soul of a deceased being. They are trapped because they either do not realize they are dead, have unfinished business they feel they must complete, or simply don’t know how to leave. Not to be confused with spirits.

HAUNTING: A ghost or spirit: to be present in (a place) or visit (a person or place) regularly.

MATERIALIZE: To take physical form or shape.

ORB: Usually seen as white balls of light caught on film, but rarely seen by the human eye. Believed to be a sign of energy, ghost or spirit. Do not confuse orbs with dust, pollen, bugs, snow or rain caught on film.

PARANORMAL: Beyond the normal realm. Not explainable in terms of our ordinary understanding, or current scientific knowledge.

PARAPSYCHOLOGY: Scientific investigation of the paranormal.

POLTERGEIST: Rare, but known to be responsible for thumps, bangs, levitating and moving objects, and physically hurting people. They are more malicious and destructive than ghosts.

PSYCHIC: One that can use their senses beyond known physical processes; sensitive to forces beyond the physical world.

RESIDUAL HAUNTING: Seeing a ghost relive important moments in their life over and over. A spirit energy that is trapped in a continuous loop. Often called a “cinema of time” haunt.

SPIRIT: The soul or divine essence. A spirit knows they are deceased, has been to the other side, and can come and go as they please. Spirits are at peace with their death, but just come back to visit. Not to be confused with ghosts.

STRING ENERGY: Lines or curvy lines that are usually orange, red or golden yellow in color. They appear in photographs that are not seen by the human eye. (Do not confuse these with light exposure streaks on 35mm film).

SUPERNATURAL: Not explainable by the known forces of laws or nature.

VORTEX: Funnel or tornado like in shape.
